Piet Paris

By Hanka van der Voet

Piet Paris is one of the most important international fashion illustrators of our time. His work regularly appears in international fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle and W. In 2008 he designed the campaign for the American department store Saks Fifth Avenue – which meant his illustrations were all over the city on the sides of New York buses – and in 2011 he designed the décor for the Viktor & Rolf spring/summer show. But Piet does not like to limit himself to one discipline. He keeps looking for projects that give him a chance to create a dream world in 3D. He took charge of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale three times, for instance, and transformed it, again and again, into a three-dimensional fashion fairy tale. In addition, he was involved in Dutch fashion teaching for years. He was co-founder of the Fashion Institute Arnhem, a Master’s programme at ArtEZ, which gave him a foundational role in the careers of many Dutch fashion designers. Piet Paris won various prizes, including the Dutch Grand Seigneur fashion prize, and his work has been included in important international standard works about fashion illustration. In this monograph, based on extensive archival research and interviews, Hanka van der Voet sketches how his technique has evolved over the years and what influenced him. Although his work appears all over the world, from Great Britain to Korea and Japan, it is astonishingly ‘Dutch’ in terms of style and fits seamlessly in the tradition of great Dutch illustrators such as Dick Bruna and Fiep Westendorp.
